The King’s School International Shenzhen is overseen by The King’s School, Canterbury. Two Board Members from Canterbury will be on the Board in Shenzhen. The two schools will have close communication with each other on matters such as teaching methods, sharing of resources and student communication. There will also be various exchange programmes for students and staff.

Geoff Cocksworth, Founding Executive Principal of The King’s School International Shenzhen

Geoff Cocksworth studied at three top UK universities, Exeter, Cambridge and London. He possesses both BA and MA degrees and a PGCE. He started his teaching career in London before moving to Canterbury in the 1990s where he has taught and managed at The King’s School for over 20 years. He had held various roles at King’s but most notably as Deputy Headmaster in charge of the academic life of the School and more recently as International Director during which time he has been travelling regularly to China.  He has been a Chief A Levels Examiner and published various articles on education and is a regular contributor at conferences around the world.

He has worked with our architects, Walters & Cohen, in England before, most notably on the design of a new International School in Canterbury.

He has three grown-up daughters, two of whom are teaching. All went to school in King’s.

John Astbury, Head of Pre-Prep and Kindergarten

John Astbury has master’s degrees from Aberdeen, Leeds and Leicester in the UK. He taught in Italy, South Korea and England before coming to China in 2001 where he has taught in Jinzhou, Shenyang and for the last 11 years in Dulwich College, Beijing, where he is Deputy Head of Early Years. He is dedicated and highly qualified educational leader with a real interest in how a school can operate at its highest potential through building strong relationships and cultural respect. He has a track record of leading projects successfully, opening new campuses and has significant experience in pedagogical, administrative and pastoral care.

Yang Lian Hong, Co-Head of Pre-Prep and Kindergarten

Ms. Yang graduated from South China Normal University, majoring in Education Management. She has accumulated over 30 years of teaching experience in early childhood education as a teacher, assistant head teacher and the Head of the Shenzhen Nanshan Government Agency Kindergarten. Ms. Yang is a dedicated researcher in early childhood education with a special interest in the all-round physical and emotional development of children, and she has also led education related research projects of the “12th Five-Year Plan” and the “13th Five-Year Plan” at both the provincial and municipal levels. Ms. Yang is the chief editor of many books on special education, family education and related topics. In addition, she has been awarded the Outstanding Head of Kindergarten by the Guangdong Province and Top Ten Principal by the Shenzhen Dandelion Education Institutions. She is also a Project Director of Pre-school Education in Shenzhen and a master degree tutor of Shenzhen University. She enjoys sporting activities, reading and travelling in her free time.
