Welcome Messages from Canterbury

Dr Roberts Willis, Chairman of the Board of Governors, The King’s School Canterbury

The King’s School, Canterbury, is one in which the creative gifts of every individual are encouraged and respected. Although King’s looks back on 1400 years of history, it is a story of continual reinvention to embrace changing educational ideals and practice sustained by the stability of a community, which values each member. The culture of China had even deeper roots, but this energy, demonstrated by the modern growth of Shenzhen, shows the same quality of embracing the present and preparing for the future. The building of a school in Shenzhen ensures the sharing of creative educational gifts between the two schools and cultures to the mutual advantage of each.

Peter Roberts, Headmaster of The King’s School, Canterbury

King’s makes two major and unique contributions to the idea of education for young people. In the King’s Schools the academic life is central, the cultivation of the mind and the development of the intellect so that all pupils from the King’s Schools are ready to succeed in the world of the 21st Century. Academic standards are very high in the King’s Schools, but they are attainable goals for all pupils. Secondly, and of equal importance, is the development of King’s pupils on the co-curricular front (music, the arts, sport, drama, leadership skills, volunteering and service): here King’s pupils learn by contributing half their School time to these wider educational goals, to be happier, more balanced, more interesting and more open-minded citizens of the Global community.

On a daily basis, the warm,, supportive and friendly atmosphere of the School sets the tone of mutual respect and understanding between teacher and pupils in classroom and in co-curricular activity, is the most remarkable aspect of life at King’s and I am confident as Headmaster, that this will be the case for the King’s International School in Shenzhen.
